Creative writing has always been my favorite source of entertainment, but it also has advantages that stretch into mental health and wellness. This means it’s possible to find both enjoyment and healing from the art.

Writings, ranging from poetry to short stories and even journaling, allow you to express feelings, thoughts, and emotions. Creative writing especially uses perception, memory, and imagination to create expressive narratives, adding an emotional aspect. As a result, writing in a therapeutic setting might improve mood and lessen stress.

A study released in the “Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition” reveals that people show better mental clarity after writing about their thoughts for 20 minutes. It is most evident in individuals with initially poor mental clarity.

These are common in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which teaches patients how to handle intense emotions, improve relationships, and cope with pain. Guided writing can also be used with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) by using prompts to help patients rethink unhelpful thoughts.

Although it’s easier to feel less alone and more connected in group therapy, some people find it hard to be themselves. Writing therapy can make it easier to communicate, helping you explore and connect.

This method can be formatted in many ways. Therapists typically give prompts and invite sharing. However, treatment can also focus on collaboration, where storytelling is completed as a group.
